About Princess Madeleine’s new exclusive cover for Swedish ELLE

logo

Elle nr1 2010This past Wednesday (17th December) Swedish ELLE released their first issue of 2010, featuring no other than Princess Madeleine on the cover. The magazine rarely writes about the Royal Family and the Princess does not give many interviews either, but when royal friend Josephine Zapata Genetay offered them a partnership that would land them an exclusive insight to Madeleine’s personality and work for World Childhood Foundation, the 14-page story and accompanying cover was a done deal.

The article is mainly about her work for the foundation, accompanying the texts are three news studio photographs and also photographs from Josephine’s and the photographer’s meetings and travels with Madeleine and Childhood staff all taken by photographer Mattias Edwall. It gives a little glimpse into what kind of person Madeleine is and what she actually does in her job. During her years as project manager it has been kept very under wraps and not much has leaked out about her journeys and work at the office. Something I appreciate is also that the clothes she wears in the studio photographs are labelled as private, not making her into some fashion poster woman for big designers as other royals have sometimes become in their glossy magazine spreads. Royal fashion on Nobel Day 2009 in Sweden, who was your favourite?

Nobel Prize Award Ceremony 2009

What the lucky invitees at the Nobel Prize Awarding Ceremony at the Concert Hall and following Nobel Prize Banquet at the City Hall are wearing is always a big topic of conversation each year on Nobel Day, 10 December, among both television watchers and media. Usually the night is followed by eager discussion among bloggers and at workplaces, and fashion résumés and judgements are quickly published in the evening tabloids. The Royal Family, who grace the events with their presence and gives them that extra bit of magic, are naturally extra interesting as the royal ladies wear pieces of historic jewellery from their collections and dresses from their favourite designers. Interesting for all who like beautiful things and royal glitter, fashionistas and those of us who are more deeply interested in royalty and historic connections in other words. (more…)

The World Childhood Foundation's Symposium

Yesterday Queen Silvia and her youngest daughter Princess Madeleine attended events celebrating the tenth anniversary of World Childhood Foundation in New York, an organisation working for children started by Her Majesty and for which the Princess these days work as a project manager at their office in Stockholm.

The World Childhood Foundation's Symposium

In the morning they attended the circa three-and-a-half hour long “2009 Childhood Anniversary Symposium: Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children – 10 years in the field” hosted together with the Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP) at the headquarters in the Big Apple. The symposium shed light on how the Convention on the Rights of the Child, celebrating its twentieth jubilee this year, has contributed to stopping assault and abuse of children, the need of developing intervention models and the need for more education and information. There was also a discussion about how they can mobilize the public and corporate world to commit themselves more to children’s issues among an invited panel. (more…)

Yesterday the Swedish Royal Family honoured the opening of the country’s parliament, Riksdagen, with their presence during the day’s activities. It started around lunchtime when a special church service for members of parliament and special guests was held in the Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan) just next to the Royal Palace. King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine all attended and listened as Dean Åke Bonnier of the Stockholm Cathedral Parish (one of the chosen officiates of Victoria’s wedding next June) lead the service and the resigning Bishop of Stockholm, Caroline Krook, preached. Who is Jonas Bergström, future royal husband and Duke of two duchies?

logo

Princess Madeleine of Sweden announces engagement - BorgholmIt’s the day after the second royal engagement in six months in Sweden and things are beginning to settle in. After so many years of following Victoria and Daniel and Madeleine and Jonas, both couples are now engaged to be married. Only the middle child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s three children remain when it comes to tying the knot and establishing an adult life and own family.

For seven years the Swedish people has little by little been introduced to the future Duke of Hälsingland and Gästrikland but yet they don’t really know him at all. Jonas has always been the handsome and caring gentleman with a close-knit family from a posh neighbourhood. His family seem like any well-behaved upper middle class family and so far they have all managed to keep very private, it’s not until now that pictures of his brothers and their families have begun to appear.

People have read plenty of articles in the media, both rather gossipy ones in the tabloids and sugary ones in the royal loyal magazines, but yet the picture of Jonas has not really cleared yet. Pictures of a handsome young man and short facts or news pieces haven’t allowed anyone to scratch the surface. Yesterday was the first time most people could see him speak and act in front of cameras together with his fiancée. One piece to the puzzle is laid but the full picture remains to be seen in years ahead. (more…)

Happy newly engaged Madeleine & Jonas met the world at Solliden

logo

Madeleine&JonasThe heavy rainfall that had been circling over Öland during the day had stopped when Princess Madeleine and her fiancé Jonas Bergström stepped out to meet the gathered media outside Solliden Palace at 4 PM (CET) this afternoon. It was a happy and confident Princess who took the word and told the present journalists and people at home by their televisions or radios around the world that they had chosen the royal summer residence because of its connection to the location of the proposal.

It was in the beginning of the summer that the couple had travelled to the island of Capri in Italy where Madeleine had wanted to see Villa San Michele, the home of Queen Victoria’s (1862-1930) doctor and close friend Axel Munthe, and the place where the late German-born Swedish Queen who later had Solliden built spent time every year. Jonas Bergström took the opportunity of the beautiful location and the historic connection when he went down on his knees and proposed on 12 June, the Princess said she quickly answered “of course I will”.

mj4During the press meeting, assistant merger and acquisitions lawyer Jonas seemed very happy and spoke with confidence and a clear voice when asking questions from the press. He said that it was Princess Madeleine’s beautiful blue eyes and her great laughter that he first fell for, and the Princess said that apart from the eyes Jonas is the sweetest person, very thoughtful and a wonderful friend. Princess Madeleine showed off her engagement ring and said this was the first day she could really wear it and that everyone could just imagine how much she had longed for this day.

A wedding date has not yet been decided but it will take place after Crown Princess Victoria’s wedding and the Swedish general elections in September 2010. It will be held in late autumn or winter. In connection to the wedding Jonas will be given the title Duke of Hälsingland and Gästrikland by the King but no further details or explanations about this has been given.

Yesterday the families of the happy couples enjoyed a crayfish party at Solliden and tonight there will be a private engagement dinner with the families.
