Just like every year, the Belgian royal family hosts a series of New Year’s receptions throughout January. Today the last one took place, traditionally the reception where most members of the family are present. Today the King, Queen, prince Philippe, princess Mathilde, prince Lorenz, prince Laurent and princess Claire attended and met with the Belgian authorities.

Earlier this month, there were also receptions on January 19th (a reception for the ambassadors)  and January 21st (a reception for NATO officials).  On the picture accompagning this blog post, you can see the King meeting with Haiti’s ambassador on January 19th. Pictures of the various receptions can be seen here, here and here.

At today’s reception, King Albert also made a speech, as usual. In this speech he referred to the economical crisis, but also to more positive news for the Belgians, for instance Herman von Rompuy becoming the first European president. He also stressed that Belgium has an important role to play in Europe and not in the last place because of its variety of spoken languages.
